Along with British paddler Jeff Allen, instructor Hadas Feldman circumnavigated Japan's four main islands, paddling 6500 kilometers over the course of six months. Weather permitting, they averaged 40- 60 kilometers a day. Sometimes, 100 mph typhoon winds kept them off the water. Along the way, they saw dolphins, much salmon, birds and, up by the northernmost island of Hokkaido, grizzly bears. There was even a shark. They met many wonderful people in the course of their journey. Some of them were fellow-sea kayakers; a great many were fishermen. They were often invited into their homes for a hot meal, a shower and a futon for the night. It was a great opportunity to learn about Japanese culture first hand.
